A woman who has turned 109 says the secret to her long life is – “NO MEN.
Miss Wright said: “I’ve stayed away from men all my life – full stop. That’s my secret, no men. And living off jelly babies – I eat a packet a day.”
Nellie Wright has reached the milestone and has never had a husband – or even a boyfriend.
She is thought to be her seaside town’s oldest female resident and celebrated with a champagne party with friends and fellow residents at her care home.
Described as “quite particular” by care manager Tracy Wood, Miss Wright, from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, moved there after enjoying regular holidays at the beach.
Originally from Leeds, West Yorkshire, Miss Wright also lived in Lancashire for 51 years and worked for her father who owned a bespoke clothing business.
Ms Wood said: “She says her secret is no men, she has never been married or had a boyfriend.
“She had a party on Sunday, April 17 which was her actual birthday, we had champagne and the Mayor came to visit. She just had a really good day.”
Miss Wright has also attributed her longevity to health and fitness and enjoying going on walking holidays. She once climbed Ben Nevis.
Ms Wood said: “She’s very friendly and pleasant. She likes to be called Miss Wright as well as Nellie – she’s quite particular.
“She takes part in the quizzes, she is really good, she knows everything. She’s a wonderful lady.”
Miss Wright is not the only resident at her care home who has celebrated a big birthday and Ms Wood Said there are two residents coming up to a 100 this year.
Ms Wood said: “We’ve got a couple of big birthdays coming up – we had one lady who reached 108 but Miss Wright is the oldest resident we have here.”
