Simon Community Northern Ireland is challenging people to help end homelessness by raising awareness and funds in a 10 mile Game of Thrones themed walk along the North Coast.
Cross the spectacular Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, take in breath-taking views and visit the world famous Game of Thrones filming locations along the way, such as the Ballintoy Harbour – the set for the Iron Islands and Larrybane Quarry – and the set for Renley Baratheons Camp.
Homelessness is a growing issue in Northern Ireland, and Simon Community have seen an increase in the number of calls to their helpline, with 33,000 last year alone. As the largest local homeless charity, Simon Community have 22 accommodation-based facilities across the region, which are constantly operating at capacity.
Chief Executive of the Simon Community Northern Ireland, Jim Dennison said: “Homelessness is Northern Ireland is a huge problem, particularly amongst young people, with around 50% of people in our accommodation under the age of 25.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg, as there are thousands more ‘hidden homeless’ – these are the people sleeping rough, staying with friends or relatives, staying in B & B’s, or even in their cars.
“By taking part in the Game of Thrones trek, we can raise awareness of homelessness as well as raise funds to help us deliver vital funds to people who rely on our support. Taking place in one of the most beautiful locations in Northern Ireland, the trek is not only a great way of helping end homelessness, but will let you take in the spectacular scenery of the North Coast.”
The event takes place on 18 June 2016, starting at Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge at 10.30am. Booking is essential. Tickets for the event are priced at £15, with a suggested minimum sponsorship of £50, and can be purchased from gameofthronesquest.evenbrite.co.uk.
