Saturday 1 October saw the launch of the new Ski Season at We Are Vertigo, “Northern Ireland’s self-styled leading entertainment complex for all ages”.
Located in South Belfast, the family activity centre offers snow-bound holidaymakers ski and snowboard lessons from fully qualified instructors, winter sports holiday packages and a range of ski fashion.
Excitement was in the air as Olympic Ski Jumping legend Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards was present at the launch.
After taking time out to pose with fans and skiing enthusiasts he said: “Elsewhere in the UK we’ve got lots of indoor ski slopes, lots of dry ski slopes…but we’ve not got anything like this, which is ideal. You learn so much quicker on a slope like this.”
Comprising of a trampoline centre, ski slopes, children’s adventure areas and a day spa, no less, We Are Vertigo owner Gareth Murphy was enthused about how people from all age ranges can come and enjoy themselves.
As a means of demonstrating this, there was one particular anecdote that Gareth was keen to tell.
“I remember one day we had an 86 year old Grandmother who had come to learn how to ski, for her birthday. This lady arrived with 18 grandchildren with her! Those kids ranged from a few months to 18 years old – and there was something here for all of them. Everyone was occupied for the entire day.”
For those who have never strapped on a pair of skis but have an interest in doing so, Gareth issued a careful warning: “Be wary – you will become addicted! It’s a fantastic sport.”
Referring to their huge indoor ski-slopes said: “Our surface is so unique that, as a beginner, what you learn in an hour and a half in here will save you four or five days out on the nursery slopes on that once in a lifetime skiing trip.”
