I was fortunate enough to be asked to review the MAC’s production of “Pinocchio” this week. Where do I begin? well, to summarise my experience on the whole, I have to say that Pinocchio is a refreshing and remarkable break from the stereotypical Christmas show experience.
However, the cast’s stellar performance ensured that the production retained the necessary Christmas sense of magic and wonderment.
The slick stage craft, props, grand illusion, interactive lighting, back drops, trickery and escapology meant that the adults were equally as entertained as the children in attendance.
Collectively, the cast are a talented ensemble with remarkable vocal ability, showcasing dance skills that enabled them to handle what could be viewed as troublesome choreography and quick costume changes with ease. The children particularly enjoyed the gentle Geppetto and the endlessly excitable yet endearing Pinocchio.
Mr fox and Mrs Cat were sheer comedic gold and enthralled both the adults and kids. The show takes audience members on a journey from Pinocchio’s magical creation and an ill fated trip to school to the land of miracles and, of course, his magical journey home. Little ones and inner children alike will be blown away by this unmissable production.
Audience members are sure to be charmed with this modern take on the globally renowned tale. Dublin native Bob Kelly (Geppetto) said: “It’s a delight to be working with Cahoots NI on Pinocchio. They have a fantastic knack for combining solid old-fashioned storytelling with incredible visuals and set pieces.”
The sponsors of this remarkable production, Phoenix Natural Gas, displayed generosity beyond comprehension and audience members were treated to refreshments, including a complimentary Pick & Mix stand, and they also provided gift packs for all children in attendance. The theatre staff were polite and efficient as always.
Cahoots NI continues to showcase a wealth of Ireland and UK talent and remains committed to breaking new ground whilst supporting the arts and creative industries.
Book now to avoid disappointment – this show is quite simply a triumph and it would be almost criminal to compare it to a traditional Christmas pantomime.
