Belfast City Council has given the go-ahead for Saturday trading at the Folktown Market in Bank Square.
The Folktown area is an emerging cultural quarter with independent shops, contemporary art studios and some of the best pubs and restaurants in Belfast.
The market originally opened in 2015 following the refurbishment of Bank Square. Sophie Rasmussen, Director, said: “We are delighted to be trading on a Saturday. We originally traded on Thursdays, but we also ran several one-off market events on Saturdays and they an amazing success. The weekly Saturday market will reinstate a long tradition of markets in area.”
Over the years there has been many developments in the area, with a new hotel and restaurants, and now with several hundred students about to move in. Co-founder of the Folktown Initiative, Joby Fox said: “Its not just about the Folktown Market. Its about connecting what we as an area have to offer with the rest of the city.”
The independent Folktown Market is a traditional and artisan market experience with quality products, promoting Belfast, local produce, food and crafts.
The market sells fresh fruit and veg, meats, cheeses, coffee, gourmet goodies, freshly prepared food as well as locally made crafts and fashion. Most of the food is sourced locally, and many of the artisans use traditional methods and recipes.
