Is This Game Of Thrones’ First Lesbian Power Couple?

A snippet from the new Game of Thrones season 7 trailer has had fans buzzing for a potential lesbian power coupling.

The official trailer sees Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand engaged in a passionate kiss, setting off rumours that there could be more high-profile LGBT romances in the new season.

With Yara’s fleet of ships, a new allegiance with Daenerys Targaryen and Ellaria’s growing dominance in Dorne, the fesity pair could be set to become the show’s first lesbian power couple. Yaaaasss.

On the other hand, it could be a tactical move on both their parts or even one of Ellaria’s infamous death kisses (Myrcella – lest we forget).

Game of Thrones has had its fair share of criticism when it comes to its portrayal of women, ethnic minorities and the LGBT community; the show has been called out for killing off most of its LGBT characters (although most characters are killed off, period) while others have praised its inclusivity.

Renly Baratheon, Loras Tyrell, Yara Greyjoy, Oberyn Martell, Ellaria Sand – there has been a string of gay, lesbian and bisexual main characters and storylines throughout the last 6 seasons.

In context, Game of Thrones author George RR Martin has reiterated that the show is greatly inspired by Medieval times, where anything outside the heterosexual ‘norm’ was forbidden. Despite this, Thrones has managed to promote diversity through its complex character portrayals.

Whether Yara and Ellaria’s romantic encounter proves fatal or not, I do hope they team up first to wreak havoc in Westeros. Just so I can start using the term Yallaria.
