As Illness Ravaged Her Body & Mind Local Photographer Debbie Deboo Reveals “Photography Saved My Life”

Welcome to my new column. I Have had M.E for 15 years and also have an under active thyroid and type 2 diabetes and IBS. I also suffer from PTSDS and anxiety. I am an occasional wheelchair user due to mobility issues and life has been very different from the active life I led before I got ill with a professional job as a teacher.

Photography is something I first gave a go about four years ago and I’m not kidding when I say it saved my life. It gave me something to get up for in the morning and it opened my eyes to the world around me.

Life is still difficult, I kid you not, but I do have a zest for life I didn’t have before and that is down to my passion for photography. Through this column I hope to inspire others and give basic photography tips aimed at everyone but particularly those with a chronic illness. Welcome to my world!

One of the amazing things about photography is that almost anyone can do it. You don’t need to have qualifications, or to have read complicated books, or YouTube tutorials. You just need a camera and enthusiasm.

When I was given my first camera about four years ago it was in response to the void in my life that had been left after I sold the award winning business that I had founded, GlamSticks. Just two years after I had founded it I was awarded the National Mobility Award 2011 for my personal vision in creating the business and for my skills in developing the products, an award I am still proud of today.

Glamsticks had got too physically and mentally demanding for me and I had to reluctantly move on. I remember being quite down about it and an interviewer for a magazine I was doing an article with put a different perspective on it when she said I was merely moving onto the next thing, whatever that was going to be. She was right, and I always think about those words now and remember life is a journey full of twists and turns, some good, some bad, but I look forward to the road ahead now. I didn’t always.

My conditions had affected my mental health badly as well as my physical health and I had attempted suicide twice as a result. Since I’ve had a camera I’ve not had a suicide attempt. So I’m not kidding when I say photography literally saved my life.

Photography is something anyone can do. Before I had my first camera I had no interest in photography and absolutely no skill. Any photographs taken in the past were usually on disposable cameras of friends etc and had the usual heads chopped off and bad compositions. So I was coming from the perspective of an absolute beginner, believe me.

Of course I had no idea how to use this new camera which was a Nikon D3100 and immediately switched it onto auto settings. I took photos of objects around the house. I often stayed in as I can’t leave the house unless someone takes me so it passed the time arranging household objects into little compositions and photographing them.

In that respect photography was quite the therapy tool in that it was giving me an outlet for the creativity I discovered I had within me and was keeping me from dwelling on my illness. This didn’t take any special skills, maybe just an artistic eye but I didn’t even know I had one so maybe there are more of you out there with hidden artistic eyes or creative butterflies waiting to emerge. You don’t know until you give it a go.
