Belfast playwright and author Leesa Harker enjoyed huge success with her Fifty Shades of Red White and Blue trilogy, a send up of the erotic fiction bestseller by EL James which replaced the winsome Anastasia Steele with the brash, outrageous and hilarious Maggie Muff.
Her comedy trilogy relocated the Fifty Shades story to Belfast and made the whole thing full of very colourful local humour.
As well as a trilogy of novels, Leesa adapted each story for the stage and local actress Caroline Curran stepped into the title role, performing each instalment as rollicking one-woman shows full of banter, profanity, memorable characters, raucous romance and brilliant Belfast wit.
Billed as a “guaranteed geg-fest” the new show Maggie Yer Ma sees the titular character trying to get to grips with motherhood and follows previous productions Dirty Dancin’ in Le Shebeen, Maggie’s Feg Run and Fifty Shades of Red White and Blue.
Life doesn’t stop when you drop a sprog and Maggie will take us on another hilarious journey as we catch up with her other half, Billy, in jail for the biggest feg run heist in history, while Maggie’s Ma is about to drop a bombshell that will curl your toes.
Her best chum, Big Sally-Ann, is no help, because she’s become a Buddhist and is ringing bells and chanting all over the show. Soon Maggie finds herself about to become a single mum – can Maggie get back to herself, the way she was? And will she be able to handle life as a new mum? What will happen between her and Billy?
Find out when the new show arrives at Belfast’s Grand Opera House June 4-16.
Maggie Yer Ma is directed by Andrea Montgomery.
