A top US production company is on the lookout for Northern Ireland’s leading and most interesting drag acts.
Legendary producer Don Powell and Los Angeles’ Burbank Entertainment have launched a casting call for Ulster’s drag queens ahead of a new reality TV show.
While the format of the show will be revealed after the interviews, the producers promise the humorous plans for the reality programme won’t be at the expense of those taking part.
The casting call is open to both experienced drag entertainers and newbies across the country with applications closing on September 19.
The idea of a reality show based on Northern Ireland’s cross-dressing stars came when Don Powell visited the recent Belfast’s Pride event.
“I happened to be in Belfast last month during Pride, with colleagues,” he explained. “I was amazed at the parade turnout and the vitality of the LGBT community.
“We went to some clubs, saw some shows, met some drag queens, and my colleague ‘This could be a terrific television show!’ and we’ve been planning it ever since.”
Powell said that the programme won’t follow the traditional reality show competition, but the actual format will only be unveiled once the casting call is complete.
“We will be interviewing each applicant individually,” said the veteran producer. “I want to know where ‘they’ are coming from, what’s on their minds, where the drama is, and from that, we’ll determine the final direction of the show.
“All I know is I want it to be funny, but not at the expense of those in the cast. I want the audience to be in on the joke and laughing ‘with’ them rather than ‘at’ them.”
