REVIEW: Why Pole Fitness is a Worthy Addition to Your Health Regime?

By Patience Bradley, Model and Author

On Saturday I was given the opportunity to attend a Polercise class, to try it out for the first time. When it comes to keeping fit, I’m a firm believer in trying new things. When your do a regular workout, your body gets used to using the same muscles all the time, so I was very excited by the prospect of being able to try something brand new for me and I have to say I loved it.

I’ve always wanted to try out this kind of Pole Fitness class and it was nothing like what I expected at all. It was very much dance orientated and I expected it to be much more energetic from the start. However, you were really eased into it and built up the different steps bit by bit.

I found the teacher of the class El was amazing, whilst it helped to be flexible or have some element of strength before starting the class. You didn’t need to be a gym bunny. The way El taught it, really catered to beginners and newcomers.

The class was great because I felt like it was really working all the different muscles, I think it’s a good way of getting a workout as you would be toning your whole body rather than just one area. It incorporated stretching, muscle toning, dance and it was all a bit of fun!

I think sometimes when you go to an exercise or fitness class a lot of beginners can come away feeling a bit disheartened, that they couldn’t do it or weren’t good enough. Then they don’t go back. Whereas in the class, everyone came away feeling like they’d achieved something, even if it was something small and El was very encouraging.

The class really stood out to me as something that was accessible for everyone, of all shapes and sizes. I think often you get people who aren’t as body confident in an exercise or dance class who stay to the back of the room and compare themselves to others. Whereas in this class it didn’t feel like that at all, everyone had their own pole and it meant we were just focusing on what we were doing ourselves rather than watching each other.

I have a bad shoulder and it didn’t affect that at all, but I definitely felt it worked all over my body for toning. I’m going to be continuing with the class in the hopes of toning my arms and upper body that I don’t really tone through the dance I already do.

I’m very excited to have signed up for the Polercise Programme and hope to continue to build my confidence in the area.
