Meet The Artist: James Mountephens aka. Synyx

Synyx is the alter ego of 45 year old music producer James Mountstephens who is the co-owner of Astute Staffing. Originally from Birmingham but currently living in Dromore, James got his first set of decks at the age of 15 after swapping some old clothes with a friend of his, Ken Fan, (who is now the resident of Cafe del Mar), but his mum clipped him round the ear and gave him a telling off, so he had to give them him back! However, not all was lost as James saved up to buy his own set of Technics a few years later. James practised the art of mixing vinyl and he was fortunate enough to establish gigs at prestigious clubs such as Miss Moneypennys, Fuel and established residences at top Midlands clubs.

What genre / style do you create in?

Electronic Dance Music/Progressive Melodic/Techno Pop.

What would you be best known for?

I would be best known in Birmingham by my former DJ name Jimmy Mac but known in Northern Ireland for being married to my wife, former Miss Northern Ireland, Angela Mountstephens.

What would you consider your biggest achievement?

Becoming a husband and a father, family life is very important to me.

What would you consider to be the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your industry?

Don’t give up, try to bring some originality and always apply maximum effort.

What has been your biggest challenge to date?

Building my studio and learning how to use it all to carve out a track. Trying to bring elements of being an independent-artist together.

Tell us a little about your personal life, are you married, kids, hobbies etc?

Married to Angela, we have two beautiful girls, Holly age 9 and Charlotte age 4.

Tell us about your most recent work?

I’ve been sitting on this track for a while. I had the pleasure of working with Alex Holmes on a project a few years back of which I never released. I then had some inspiration out to Alex for top lining over a Progressive Melody.

What would you like us to tell people about?

My NEW RELEASE!! SYNYX featuring. Alex Holmes – Drop the Bomb out now. Super cool track.

If you had to describe your work to someone who has never heard of you what would you say?

I’d say its really cool progressive house, with drips of electronica and techno pop. Essentially I’m going to be covering lots of genres. Every release could be quite different.

What’s the funniest experience you’ve had in your business?

There’s been too many to mention. I’ve played some great DJ sets with big name DJ’s and been fortunate enough to play to large crowds.

What would your advice be to young people hoping to pursue the same industry?

I always say to people the hardest thing about any business is physically starting it, once you start something it will often start to manifest itself, you just have to give it energy.

Anything else you want to tell people about yourself or your work?
