Belfast Design Week Kicks Off With Packed Programme

This year’s Belfast Design Week moves online, but there is still a packed programme that ranges from sustainability through to innovation initiatives from November 2 – 8.

Events begin on Monday morning with Boundaries, as poet and architect duo, Kreider + O‘Leary, take a closer look at boundaries and borderlands in a performative exploration of how we might live together.
For the past five years they have been building an archive related to the ‘peace walls’ and interface areas of Belfast (www.peacewall-archive.net).

The next day a breakfast seminar Fathom will look at design and sustainability in developing digital products.

The same day Makematic will deliver a design sprint for 16-18 year olds for them to see how media companies develop content and ideas for video.

As well as the main programme there are Design Week fringe events, including an online symposium on ‘Future Sailortown’ on Friday, November 6, to share and celebrate more than a year of collaboration for a better built environment in the historic district of Belfast.

On Thursday November 5 there will be a webinar led by Brian Coyle senior lecturer in games design at Ulster University that will look over the key elements of games, typical skills game designers should possess and look at how we can create games that are fun, exciting and engaging.

As well as the online events there will be a number of outside events – all adhering to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines. One of which is the 9-Feet in common, exploring the alleyways and hidden spaces around Ormeau Road and Deramore Avenue area and what they are and were used for.
A panel discussion, entitled Design in Crisis, will look at what role design played in Northern Ireland’s digital response to the current pandemic.

Included in the programme is the Capture Conference, delivering a series of interactive events. One of which will see Cinematographer Lawrence Sher, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on hit movie Joker, answer questions on his lengthy body of work.
