Meet the Blogger: Sian Hughes-McKane

Sian is a 23 year old customer service advisor living in Belfast. She is originally from Ballyhalbert and classes herself as a body positivity blogger. But says in reality she is just a plus size girl going about her business and posting what she’s doing.

Why did you decide to become a blogger/influencer?

I always loved posting content of my outfits and living a carefree unapologetic way, I think it’s important for people to see others not take themselves too seriously!

Tell us something your followers might not already know about you?

I’m pretty much an open book but I don’t like to disclose my relationships! Some of my friends, family and boyfriend mostly aren’t that big into social media so I know they wouldn’t be comfortable posting the ins and outs of my personal life involving them!

What would you consider your biggest achievement as a blogger/influencer?

Before we went into lockdown, I was invited to Dublin to do a photoshoot with a sustainable brand (@thewildeire) when it was postponed, I was heartbroken. Since the restrictions were lifted I was able to travel and take part in August with incredible, empowering women! I knew that this is what I wanted to do and felt most at ease doing but it gave me the push to really appreciate the opportunities I have been given.

What would you consider the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in the industry?

Definitely how cruel people can be. With being a plus size girl you can get a lot of nasty messages and comments but it’s looking at the message and knowing that what the trolls are saying is the complete opposite of the truth! They don’t know me so the comments about my weight or how I look do not bother me.

What has been your biggest challenge to date?

At the end of 2019 I was made homeless  just after I quit my job in the hospitality industry. I would use my resilience as one of my top traits, as by January 2020 I had signed a contract with boohoo and got an apartment in the city with my bestie, it was an incredibly testing time and I have never been more thankful for my positive attitude as instead of dwelling on the hardship I was facing I made sure I did everything I could to keep myself comfortable.

Do you feel that bloggers are unfairly judged at times, if so why?

Yes and no! Yes because no one is perfect and we are all human, but no as when you make yourself available to the public you are putting yourself up for some sort of scrutiny! The extent some bloggers get though is way too much, people forget that they are real people with real lives!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start a blog/instagram page?

DO IT!! post what you’re comfortable with and don’t read too much into engagement, it’s a recipe for a disaster caring about the numbers too much. Just have fun!

What local blogger do you look up to and why?

Oh so many! I love @oliviamcveigh her IGTV’s make me scream laughing

What international blogger do you look up to and why?

@hollymarston @faithaliceh @is0belx the list could go on! All UK plus size body positive gals who I love to see on my feed! Everyone in the community is so cool and open about the struggles of being into fashion and being plus size so it’s fab to have found a community online of people who have struggled with our appearance and accepting ourselves for who we are.
