Open call to artists to create a new co-designed piece of street art in Belfast

Belfast City Council announced an open call to all street artists to submit a proposal for creating a new co-designed piece of street art in the city that reflects on the people and the communities of Belfast.

The proposal is to serve as part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme, celebrating the centenary of Northern Ireland.

The programme, funded by Northern Ireland Office, proposed four key themes in line with Belfast’s ‘A City Imagining’ cultural strategy and featuring some of the brand’s colour palette.

Artists are encouraged to send in proposals that capture a moment in time for the city.

The cultural strategy’s themes for this decade are:

  • ‘A City Belonging’ is about making the city a place where you feel at home and where you can express yourself culturally,
  • ‘A City Challenging’ focuses on embracing diversity. The theme explores and celebrates diverse lifestyles, traditions and attitudes,
  • In ‘A City Creating’, artists are encouraged to push the boundaries of creativity,
  • ‘A City Exploring’ wants to strengthen our place in the world local, regional and internationally.

Proposals are encouraged to incorporate a co-design process to develop the themes/design for this piece of street art with local groups from neighbourhoods and communities in the city.

The successful proposal will receive up to £4,000 to cover artist’s fees and materials, including the cost of delivering community engagement events. The finished piece will also be featured in a ‘trail’ showcasing works from other participating council areas in Northern Ireland.

The deadline for proposals is Monday 28 June at noon. Belfast City Council will award one submission by 30th June.
