Prof Jan Jedrzejewski Appointed to the Advisory Group for the English Subject Benchmark Statement

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has confirmed its Advisory Groups for upcoming Subject Benchmark Statement (SBS) reviews and Professor Jan Jędrzejewski, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Ulster University, has been appointed to the Advisory Group for the review of the SBS for English.

QAA Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies. They are used as reference points in the design, delivery and review of academic programmes.

Prof Jan Jędrzejewski joined Ulster University as a Lecturer in English in 1993, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2001, and he became a Professor of English and Comparative Literature in 2007. He held the posts of Acting Head of the Humanities Research Institute (2008-2009), Acting Head of the School of History and International Affairs (2009), Head of the School of English and History (2009-2014), and Dean of the Faculty of Arts (2014-2017).

A specialist in nineteenth-century English literature, particularly the Victorian novel, Professor Jędrzejewski also has a major interest in comparative literature, focusing on the literary relations between the British Isles and Poland. He has produced two monographs and four edited books, including critical editions of major works of Victorian literature, as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.

On his appointment, Professor Jan Jedrzejewski said:

“I am honoured to have been appointed by the QAA to the advisory group for the review of the Subject Benchmark Statement for English for 2022 and look forward to working with academic colleagues and students from across the UK on this important task.

“Collectively, we will take account of the most recent developments in English to ensure that the Subject Benchmark Statement continues to be valued and is as useful as possible for the English academic community.”
