Frontline Workers To Get Real Living Wage

QCS Contract Cleaning has announced it has become a Real Living Wage employer providing its staff with £9.90 per hour which will be 40p/per hour above the new minimum wage which came into force on the 1st April.

The first cleaning company in Northern Ireland to do so, QCS General Manager Jan Stephenson said it means most of our employees working an average of 20hrs a week will be over £1,000 a year better off.

She said: “We have over 260 employees and just like all the other essential frontline workers, they stepped up to help other organisations and people remain Covid-19 compliant through the pandemic.

“Everyone appreciates the dedication of key workers but the Real Living Wage is a way to actually help them pay fuel bills and feed their families.  QCS is proud to be one of around only 40 employers in Northern Ireland to pay the higher rate as calculated by the Living Wage Foundation.”

The Living Wage Foundation calculates the minimum hourly rate needed to give a full-time worker and their family a reasonable standard of living.

Jan explained the decision was taken in collaboration with its 180 clients: “We have always conducted an annual review with QCS clients to ensure continuous improvement in our services and when necessary to negotiate cost increases reflecting the cost of doing business.

“Our clients value a consistency in service from the highly trained and talented cleaners they are serviced by.

“We congratulate our clients for their overwhelmingly positive support to QCS paying a Real Living Wage. It benefits the employee, the client and the wider economy, but being a responsible employer also helps us to retain and attract more staff as we continue to grow.”

The real living wage is an hourly rate of pay calculated by the Living Wage Foundation charity based on what people need to live on. It’s paid voluntarily by almost 9,000 UK employers, but in the UK, Northern Ireland has the highest proportion of jobs paying below the Real Living Wage.

Headquartered in Belfast QCS Contract Cleaning operates across N Ireland specialising in offices and commercial properties, as well as schools, factories, pharmaceuticals, warehousing and manufacturing settings.
