National research has revealed that James Cameron’s Titanic is the UK’s favourite period drama movie of all time.
The 1997 blockbuster was chosen by 25% of respondents, with Gladiator (2000) and The King’s Speech (2010) coming in at 18%, marking the top three .
The research was conducted by Showcase Cinemas ahead of the release of Downton Abbey: A New Era, with the 2019 film adaptation sweeping first place for the number one movie Brits wish they could be a part of.
As 15% of respondents wish they could be a part of Downton Abbey (2019), Gladiator (2000) was voted for by 11% and Pride and Prejudice (2005) by 10%.
Downton Abbey also saw the number one spot for the period drama film with the best costume design and the movie with the best house.
In honour of the films release on Friday past, Showcase Cinemas will be host to afternoon tea with a twist as it serves nachos, mini hot dogs, popcorn and pick and mix.
Mark Barlow, UK General Manager for Showcase Cinemas, said:
“The big screen has provided us with so many incredible dramas over the years, but Titanic was an instant hit on its release 25 years ago, becoming the highest grossing film of all time, surpassed by Avatar in 2009. For that reason, it’s definitely a worthy winner of best period drama.
“Elsewhere, the magic of Downton Abbey has certainly translated to cinema, with the iconic period drama being named winner in three separate categories.
“Therefore, we expect the next instalment, Downton Abbey: A New Era, to prove just as popular – and we can’t wait to see excited cinemagoers fill our screens.”
