Asda Dundonald Colleagues Score Fundraising ‘Goal’ For Children’s Cancer Charity

Asda colleagues from the Dundonald store swapped the sanctuary of the shop floor for the frenzy of the football pitch in support of the Cancer Fund for Children.

They were one of eight Asda stores which joined forces for a football tournament that raised £5,600 for the Cancer Fund for Children, a charity that helps ensure children and young people don’t have to face cancer alone.

Captained by Asda’s team of Community Champions, the colleagues put their football skills and goal-scoring talents to the test in a fiercely contended full day’s tournament.

Ultimately the Asda team from Downpatrick were victorious after a neck-and-neck match against Asda Kilkeel which went to penalty shootout. However the real trophy was the vital funds which will help provide an array of crucial support service for children affected by cancer, including advice, medical help, youth development and counselling.

Molly Wilson, Community Fundraiser for Cancer Fund for Children said: “We thank each of the Asda stores and every colleague who put so much effort into making today happen. It was a true team effort and the sense of comradery and pride really shone through.

“We work at the front face and understand the devastating impact a cancer diagnosis can have on the whole family. We also know that the funds raised from this event will go such a long way in helping us ensure none of these families have to navigate this experience alone. Well done to everyone involved!”

Sharon McBratney, Community Champion at Asda Dundonald, said: “We all agreed our day at Valley Leisure Centre was very special. We couldn’t all be winners on the pitch but we felt unified in our efforts and were thrilled to be able to support this great charity in such a purposeful way. It was certainly a real change from the day job!

“Well done to Asda Downpatrick on taking home the title, hopefully we all get another chance to show off our football skills in the future.’’
