Running a business always comes with highs and lows. When you first start out and it’s just you on your bootstrapping journey, you may find that there aren’t many lows at all. After all, it’s just you and your dreams – and you have all the time in the world to learn things, put yourself out there, and see where things take you. Then, as things start to grow, you’ll find that you may experience more lows. You’re learning, maybe you’re taking more risks, and it’s harder than ever to handle everything on your own. So you stop.
At some point, you will hire employees. This is always going to be one of the best things you do for your business. Having a team behind you is what’s going to take you to the next level. Yet, even with that in mind, it’s important to recognise that it’s essential to not only hire the right people, but keep them too!
This is why you always need to make your employees feel appreciated. But how exactly can you do that? In this blog post, we’re going to run through some ideas to help you.
Provide a Good Working Space
To begin with, never underestimate the power of the right working space. You’ll find that it’s super important for you to have an office space or business premises that is suitable for your team. People work well in the right environment – so focus on what will feel best for that. Looking at office layouts, creative break room ideas for employees, and considering design ideas will really help here. After all, you will always want your staff to feel comfortable first and foremost.
Set the Tone
With your office all sorted, you also need to make sure that you’re bringing in the right tone too. And this one really will make all the difference. Your employees always want to be happy at work. They want to like where they work and enjoy it. But that’s always going to be hard to do if you’re not able to have a healthy, collaborative, positive working environment.
Encourage Open Communication
As a step on from that, think about the way that you all communicate – and how you actually encourage it too. Make sure that people know they can talk to you openly and honestly. The last thing you want is a team of people that are afraid of you. As long as healthy boundaries are in place, this will always be a good thing.
Encourage Collaboration
Likewise, you want everything to be a team effort. Sure, you hire experts for their knowledge, skills, and experience, but when everyone is working together, it’s much better for the business. So encourage your different teams to communicate and work together on projects so everything can go from strength to strength.
Reward Your Employees
Now, don’t get this confused with believing that you can provide your staff with a good benefits package and leave it at that. Remember, that is the bare minimum that you should provide to an employee that is going to really help you take your business to the next level. Rewards are all about recognising and appreciating outstanding performance and contributions. After all, if you want them to do well for you, you need to show that you appreciate the effort!
Have Fun Socials
It’s also important to remember that all work and no play is, well, kinda boring! As much as you’re a business and there’s work to be done, you want your employees to actually like working for you too. Plus, team building is always going to be a great thing for everyone. So plan fun work socials and different events throughout the year – not just for show or to improve working relationships, but for fun and as another way to reward too!
Provide Opportunities for Growth
Finally, you are also going to want to ensure that you’re putting opportunities for growth on the table. It’s very rare that you’ll find a member of staff that’s happy to start in a junior position and not grow – or worse, stay on the same salary year after year! So, you need to make sure that you’re taking through their career goals with them and letting them know that further doors can open for them as you grow (as long as this is true). Again, you’ll want to take your best staff with you, all the way up the ladder, as the business goes from strength to strength.
