For many Brides, flowers play an important role in setting the scene of their Big Day. From the bridal bouquet to the gents’ buttonholes, and from table centrepieces to venue decorations, lots of weddings incorporate floral arrangements as a key element of the décor.
With such an important role to play, you’ll want to ensure the flowers you choose are robust and long-lasting, don’t cause any unnecessary allergies, and – for those who are a little more superstitious – don’t result in any bad luck!
To help you out, here are six flowers to avoid for your wedding day:
Tulips
While they’re a very pretty flower that are often available in a wide range of colours, Tulips sadly don’t live for very long once removed from the ground. Wilting flowers and drooping stalks aren’t a good look for a wedding.
Hydrangeas
These are fragile flowers that typically last for around three hours when removed from water. They can still be used in centrepieces provided they are kept in a vase, though they are best avoided for bouquets.
Daffodils
Handling daffodils is best avoided, as they are known to cause contact dermatitis, a rather unpleasant and very itchy rash that can appear quickly, spread easily, and take quite a while to get rid of!
Chrysanthemums
Don’t be fooled by these adorable flowers! Chrysanthemums, as well as goldenrod, are two of the worst flowers for those who suffer from allergies due to the massive amounts of pollen they release. Best avoided unless you want sniffles, sneezes, and red eyes all around.
Calla Lily
A beautiful member of the lily family, these pure white flowers might look like a great idea for a wedding but they should be avoided if there will be children or animals in attendance. They are very toxic, and potentially even fatal, if the pollen or certain parts of the flower are swallowed.
Superstition
No, superstition isn’t a type of flower, but all of the following carry some historical sentiments that you may wish to avoid if you believe in bad luck: foxglove is associated with insincerity, infidelity is attributed to larkspur, lavender is indicative of distrust, marigold is associated with grief, and rhododendron with danger. Most yellow flowers also have negative connotations.
