Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award-winning play The Beauty Queen of Leenane has arrived at the Lyric Theatre.
Running until Saturday July 1, this contemporary classic play has been enjoyed by audiences for almost thirty years.
Based in the Irish village of Lennane, The Beauty Queen of Leenane centres on the character of Mauren Folan and her turbulent relationship with her demanding mother, Mag.
The dramatic play tackles tough themes, with violence and cruelty included within the stage show.
Having enjoyed overwhelming success on both the West End and Broadway, the play has previously been nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Belfast Play alongside its six Tony Award nominations, winning a total of four.
The run at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre began on May 27 and will continue throughout the month, reaching its final performance on July 1.
Directed by Emma Jordan, you can see rising stars such as Nicky Harley, Caolan Bryan and more on stage as you uncover why it has received critical acclaim.
Theatre magazine The Stage gave the production four stars, writing: “the jagged emotional edges and brutal humour of Martin McDonagh’s early play are laid bare in this skilfully rounded, cohesive revival”.
The Irish Times’ Jane Hardy has also heaped praise upon the show and its cast, describing Nicky Harley’s (Maureen) performance as “stunning” and Ger Ryan’s portrayal of Mag as “five-star”. It’s a “performance that stays with you after the applause”, adds Hardy.
Running for a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes, the play features a 20 minute interval and has several evening performances throughout the week as well as matinees on the weekend.
Tickets to see The Beauty Queen of Leenane are priced from £15 and are on sale now at lyrictheatre.co.uk/the-beauty-queen-of-leenane
