Top Reasons to Downsize Your Home

The decision to downsize your home isn’t just about packing up because the kids have left. Downsizing is a big decision because you’re choosing to make a big choice about their future. There comes a time when you have to make a lifestyle decision that draws you to downsizing and whether the kids have moved out and you don’t need as much space or you simply want to pack up and travel, self storage is always an option.

Understanding your reasons to downsize is going to help you to say yes to it though, so you should consider making sure that you are happy with your decision before you go ahead with it. You wouldn’t believe the number of people who downsized and then seriously regret it afterwards because they haven’t considered that they could really let go of the extra space. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at all of the reasons that you should choose to say yes to downsizing your home.

  • An empty nester. The kids have grown up, they’ve moved out, and they have their own apartments now, which means that your home is an empty nest. The thing is, a lot of people grieve this idea, but you have to consider the benefits here. With the kids moved out of the house, you get your freedom back, in a sense, which means that you no longer have to be beholden to their child at home anymore. If you want to move out and go traveling, or if you want to change their rooms into something else, you can even better knowing that they’re not going to be coming back to your home, you can easily decide to move somewhere smaller with less upkeep, less cleaning and a lot more fun for yourself.
  • There’s too much maintenance involved. Having a large house is great when your kids are little, but when it’s just you, you have to consider the fact that there is a lot of maintenance involved in keeping a house going. If the kids have moved out, then that doesn’t mean you can’t move on. They would be ready to do their thing and now it’s time for you to do yours.
  • The finances no longer make sense. It may have once made sense for you to have a larger home, but with no children around, you no longer need to spend all that money keeping the house going. If the finances don’t match up, why struggle to keep the house the way it is? If you can move out to somewhere cheaper and smaller that is more comfortable for you?
  • Your job has changed. Some reasons are nothing to do with having kids or an empty nest but if your job has changed then it makes sense that you’d want to move out and start fresh somewhere else. It gives you a new perspective and a new Future if you choose to move out and have a new job elsewhere.
