How New University Students Can Mentally Prepare for Living On Their Own

While yes, it’s completely true that having to move to a new home can be exciting but scary. Plus, you’re hit with a wave of things that need to be done ASAP. But on top of that, you also need to figure out where you’re going to be moving to soon. Thankfully, nowadays, when it comes to having university accommodation, you’re not immediately stuck with choosing a dorm or a shared run-down student house, but instead, there are some options that you can have.

Generally speaking, it’s nice knowing there are options, so you can expect to live comfortably (students have been known for not really getting to live all that comfortably), but with that said, it’s still about the idea of living on your own. Your life is about to change from living with your parents to moving to university, and sure, this is normal and just another phase in life, but it’s still terrifying. So, how can you mentally prepare for all of this?

Just Embrace The More Exciting Aspects

Alright, this might sound a tad generic, but it’s true! So, the first step in mentally preparing for university life is embracing the excitement. This is a time for new beginnings, where you’ll meet new people, explore new interests, and start shaping your future. Focus on the opportunities that lie ahead and the adventure that awaits. So, why not go ahead and visualise yourself thriving in this new environment, making new friends, and enjoying your studies? In general, it’s about keeping a positive outlook, which can help ease anxiety and build enthusiasm for the journey ahead.

Acknowledge Your Fears

It’s totally fine that you’re dealing with this; seriously, everyone has fears about moving out on their own, so you’re better off not suppressing these. Actually, it might even help to just go ahead and talk about your concerns with friends, family, or a trusted mentor.

People older than you have dealt with this, so sharing your worries can provide comfort and perspective. Just remember, you’re not alone; many other students are feeling the same way. So, understanding that these feelings are a normal part of the transition can help you manage them more effectively.

Do You Already Have Essential Life Skills?

While yes, ramen and microwaveable meals are what students survive on, do you really want to be like that? When you’re on your own, you have to take care of yourself. You have to wash and dry your own laundry, as your mom isn’t going to be there to do it. So, before you move out, learn how to properly cook and clean, as this is going to boost confidence. Again, you have to learn to do this yourself; if you don’t, this can actually impact relationships down the line.

Are You Taking Care of Your Mental Health?

So, you really have to keep in mind that taking care of your mental health is crucial during this transition. By all means, you have the right to feel stressed out with this massive change, truly, do you? While yes, this sounds so overdone and so generic, you just need to make sure to prioritise self-care by eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. You have to engage in activities that you enjoy and find relaxing, whether it’s reading, playing a sport, or practising mindfulness.
