How to Be a Good Pet Owner

If you love being the owner of a pet pooch or a sweet little kitten, then you need to make sure that you are the best pet owner ever. You should be doing all that you can to be responsible as a pet owner, and not only do you want to have a cooperative relationship with your pet, you need to make sure that that’s cohesive with your environment and your family. Understanding how to be a good pet owner is a lot like understanding how to be a good person. You treat them exactly how you would want to be treated if there was someone much bigger than you around.

Pets are a blessing and they will love you for their whole life,  even if you won’t have them for your whole life. They’re excellent for your physical and mental health, but they’re also super cute. Putting yourself in their front and centre like that should tell you that the way that you look after them really does matter. It’s not just about how many walks you give your dog a day or how many probiotics for dogs you try out. You need to make sure that your pet is well fed and is happy. And for that to work out you need to know these tips of how to be a good part owner.

  1. Love your pet unconditionally. Most of us do, but you do need to make it a daily priority to spend some time loving them. Showing them physically that you love them is how your pet knows that they are in the right place and that you are happy. If you have a dog, get outside with him and play with him. Teach him a trick, give him a treat. Show him as much affection as possible because you are the centre of their world. No matter what, they want to please you and you can show them. If you have a cat, make sure that you are available for cuddles. Even if they’re not a lap cat, let them sit beside you, play with them and stroke their fur. Groom them with a brush and feed them delicious food so that they are purring at you at every given opportunity. Loving your pet unconditionally is just the bare minimum.
  2. Add dental care to their grooming routine. If you love to brush your dog’s fur coat, then make sure that you are also brushing his teeth. If you don’t brush their teeth every day, you’re not alone. Only 2% of dog owners will brush their dog’s teeth every day, despite their recommendations to do so. Making good dental hygiene part of a responsible ownership ritual is going to help you to be a better pet owner.
  3. Have an emergency plan. If you have an emergency plan for your home and insurance for your contents, then make sure that you have an emergency plan and insurance for your pet too. Crises happen and accidents happen, so if you plan for the unexpected, you are going to be further ahead. If you are the sort of person that puts bug out bags together for your family, then make sure you have one for your pet too. When you think things through? You’re going to be far more prepared than you think you will be.
  4. Clean up after them. When you walk your dog and they go to the bathroom, clean up after them. Don’t leave it there for someone else. It’s one of the worst things about being a pet parent in that you’re going to have to pick up some poop from time to time, but it’s such an important step. If you have a cat, make sure that they have a fresh litter tray every week and make sure that the litter that they have is cleared out daily. This will keep them healthy and happy and make sure that they’re not pooping around other areas of your home.
  5. Take them to the vet. Whether it’s for shots or for general well-being and health checkups, make sure that you are taking your pet to the vet. Being a good pet owner means looking after their health from top to tail, and that also means making sure that you are keeping your home a healthy place for them to be. Taking them to the vet is sometimes going to suck for your pet because they don’t like to go somewhere that they have to have shots or medication, but it’s going to be something that you have to do if you want to be responsible.
