Heels at the ready! Strictly Come Dancing favourite Johannes Radebe is set to dazzle Belfast audiences as he steps into the role of Lola in a brand-new production of Kinky Boots The Musical, strutting into the Grand Opera House, running until June 25.
The glitzy, feel-good musical, which boasts a score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein, is being reimagined by producers ROYO and Curve Leicester for a major UK and Ireland tour, kicking off in January next year. Directing the all-new staging is Curve’s Artistic Director Nikolai Foster, known for Billy Elliot and The Wizard of Oz.
Joining Johannes on stage will be rising musical theatre star Dan Partridge as Charlie Price – a factory heir who finds unexpected salvation for his struggling business in the fabulous and fearless drag performer Lola.
A huge hit on Broadway and the West End, Kinky Boots is inspired by a true story and a cult film of the same name. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and the power of high heels — wrapped in a musical that celebrates individuality and community spirit.
Speaking about the new production, Lauper said: “Kinky Boots is one of the things I’m proudest of in my career. It’s like a happy pill – and we could all use some of that right now!” Fierstein added, “An all new production in its place of origin makes it all a billion times more exciting. I can’t wait to welcome Kinky Boots home.”
The Curve creative team said casting Johannes in the role of Lola has been “electrifying and profoundly moving”. Known for making Strictly history with its first all-male partnership alongside John Waite, the South African-born dancer has since become a best-selling author, tour de force performer, and even led a dance workshop at Buckingham Palace attended by Queen Camilla.
Dan Partridge, no stranger to the big stage, has starred in Grease, Cats, Hairspray, and ITV’s Archie. His commanding presence and versatility are expected to make Charlie’s journey as heartfelt as it is foot-stomping.
The production also boasts choreography by Leah Hill, set and costume design by Robert Jones, and lighting by Ben Cracknell. Casting was led by Harry Blumenau.
“This is a story of British industrial heritage, overcoming adversity, the power of heels and the importance of being yourself,” said the Curve’s Chris Stafford and Nikolai Foster.
