Mid-Life Glow Up as Women Over 50 Embrace Adventure Creativity and Independence

A new study has revealed that seven in ten women over the age of 50 are embracing a ‘mid-life glow up’, with many setting out to fulfil long-held dreams including travel, creative pursuits and financial freedom.

The research, conducted by Ford Money, surveyed 2,000 women aged over 50 to explore their aspirations for the future. Seeing the Northern Lights was the most common goal, cited by 54 percent of respondents, followed by travelling on the Orient Express (48 percent) and visiting Niagara Falls (31 percent).

Other ambitions included learning a new language (30 percent), creating the perfect garden (19 percent), and moving to another country (18 percent). Many women also expressed interest in writing a novel (18 percent), starting a business (10 percent), or volunteering for charity (16 percent). Financial independence was a key focus for 27 percent of participants.

The findings suggest that women in their 50s and 60s are redefining what this stage of life looks like. Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) said they see this period as a positive new chapter, rather than a mid-life crisis. A further 74 percent reported feeling more content now than they did when they were younger, and 61 percent said they have gained a new outlook on life since turning 50.

Key factors contributing to this shift in mindset include caring less about what others think (56 percent), changing priorities (54 percent), and focusing more on what truly matters (54 percent). Additional reasons included having more free time (31 percent) and wanting to focus on personal fulfilment (36 percent).

Almost two-thirds (61 percent) of respondents believe women over 50 are more active and adventurous than in previous generations. The study also found that 48 percent of participants are regularly putting money aside to help realise their ambitions.

Monna Patel, Operations Manager at Ford Money, said: “The results clearly show that life in your 50s and 60s is not about winding down like previous stereotypes suggested.

“Today’s generation of women are embracing this chapter with real ambition, focussed on goals like travel, buying property and achieving financial freedom.

“For many, having money set aside is the key to unlocking these exciting ambitions. It’s not just a safety net; it’s the essential fuel that gives us the freedom to live life exactly how we choose.

“While it’s great that many feel confident and that they can fund their dreams, it’s also important to back that confidence with a plan. Actively thinking about those bigger goals and weaving them into our finances each month is how we turn them into a reality.”
