Selling To Commuters? Try This

Brands like to define their audiences and figure out who it is that they’re actually selling to. Sometimes at the end of that effort, they discover that it’s one thing: commuters.

But what should you be doing if you’re selling to commuters? Where should you be placing your ads and what sort of a product should you sell?

Here are your answers:

Target The Busiest Areas
First, you’ll want to target commuters with marketing in the busiest areas of town. That’s because they usually make their way through transit hubs on the way to and from work, depending on their job.

For example, in London, many brands use Underground ads. These often generate tens of thousands of impressions per day, thanks to the sheer volume of people who walk past them.

You can also put ads on big screens in these venues. Again, that can be a great way to grab attention and remind your customers that you exist.

Offer Quick Portable Solutions

As for products, you want to ensure that you’re offering your customers quick and portable solutions. Commuters are the type of people who like to bring things with them, since they spend so much of their lives on public transport.

For example, a lot of commuters enjoy using grab-and-go items, like snacks and coffee. Therefore, there’s usually a significant market for easy-to-consume food and drink.

Bicycles that fold up are another business opportunity, as are things like portable electronics. Commuters naturally gravitate to these, especially subscription plans on apps.

Time Your Pitch

Another thing you’ll want to do is time your pitch, you’ll want to make sure that you’re offering ads at a time that makes sense for commuters and that’s going to really excite them about what you have to offer.

Remember, commuters are the type of people whose needs change significantly throughout the day. During the mornings, they need a lot of coffee but in the afternoons, they want more entertainment and things to help them unwind. Therefore, you’ll want to sell to commuters depending on their mood. The types of ads you run on digital billboards will be quite different in the mornings from the evenings.

Use Local Information

Commuters are, by definition, quite location-dependent. As such, you can often use this in your marketing. Providing them with real-time data on things like delays, traffic levels, and so on can make a significant difference.

Leverage Impulsivity

Finally, after a long day at work, many commuters are more prone to impulse purchases. They’ve worked hard and they feel like they’ve earned the right to spend some money.

If you notice any of this impulsivity starting to take hold among your audience, then you may want to take advantage of it. If you can tap into that psychology, then you can often make a lot more money.

So there you have it: some of the ways you can market to commuters and make a good go of it. If you can get into their mindset, you’ll be successful.
